I had an IEEE Meeting in Seattle the other weekend and on our drive back to Spokane we went by this sign. I am thinking now that we should have stopped to see if they really did master the burger.
Still Dining in the Car
I find drive in’s odd, the kind that you stay in your car and the staff comes to you. I’m not sure what it is, but they seem to be relics of a time long long ago. I have been by a couple of these in the Spokane area, and I am not sure what to think of them. I don’t think that there are any left in Nova Scotia, I can vaguely remember the A&W in Port Hawkesbury coming out to the car when I was growing up.
You roll down the window and someone would come out to get your order. They would use this neat bracket that would hook on your window and the tray would sit on it. When you were done, they would come back for the tray and you would be on your way.
It is vaguely nostalgic, but I don’t think that they are great in today’s world. I try not to use drive thrus anymore, I want to get in the store and have some face to face interaction. So much of my time is spent on the phone or in front of a computer (and usually both) and now at least 40 minutes in the car that I don’t get enough talking to random people, even it is just a someone slinging me a burger..
